BSE Sensex trades below 33,400 points, while the Nifty 50 slips below 10,300. Here are the latest updates Mumbai:  The market got off to a muted start on Monday on weakness in IT and metal stocks after participants took profit amid sluggish global pointers. The Sensex fell 54.59 points, or 0.16%, to 33,288.21 in early session. The gauge had gained 582.36 points in the previous two sessions. Also, the NSE Nifty shed 22.10 points, or 0.21%, to 10,261.50. Eating a handful of nuts twice a week can slash the risk of heart disease

E ating a handful of nuts a couple of times a week can cut the risk of heart disease by almost a quarter, research has shown. A study of over 200,000 people found those who ate walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, pistachios, pecans and peanuts two or more times a week were 23 per cent less likely to develop coronary heart disease and 15 per cent less likely cardiovascular disease. The same amount of peanuts - which strictly speaking are a legume - also reduced the risk of the conditions by 15 and 13 per cent respectively. Nuts have long been regarded a 'superfood' as they are high in antioxidants, proteins, nutrients, minerals and fibre. Lead author Dr Marta Guasch-Ferre, a nutritionist at Harvard University in Boston, said: "Our findings support recommendations of increasing the intake of a variety of nuts, as part of healthy dietary patterns, to reduce the risk of chronic disease in the general populations." A man was detained today for allegedly threatening to hijack a Mumbai-bound Jet Airways flight at the Cochin International Airport, forcing a security scare and delay in the departure. The airline has informed the relevant authority of the same for further necessary action and has offered full cooperation as required," it said.

GST Council cuts tax rate on 178 items; all restaurants to be taxed at 5%

The  GST Council , which held its 23rd meeting in Guwahati on Friday reduced the tax rate on 178 items from 28 per cent to 18 per cent. GSTCouncil also brought all AC and non-AC restaurants in the 5 per cent GST bracket without the input tax credit (ITC). Only 50 items, mostly demerit, sin and luxury goods will be in the 28 per cent tax bracket. All members of the GST Council felt that input tax credit (ITC) to restaurants is not passed on customers.  Goods and Service Tax  (GST) was being charged on existing rates which put additional tax burden on restaurant goers. Thus, we decided that restaurant industry will not get the benefit of ITC,  Finance Minister Arun Jaitley  said. Rates for all AC and non-AC restaurants will be 5 per cent. "Since they did not pass on the ITC benefit to customers, they will not be eligible for the benefit themselves," Jaitley added.
